Nachtenabo II was the last native Pharaoh to rule Egypt. He came
to power while Egypt's main enemy, the Persian empire was in
internal turmoil and this protected him from their aggression.
Once the Persian ruler Artaxerxes III had established a firm
grip over his internal affairs he turned his attention again
towards Egypt. Greek mercenaries fought on both sides, but the
Persian forces were victorious. Nachtenabo was forced to take
refuge in Nubia as one Egyptian city after another fell to the
Persians.
