Ahmose II came to the throne after the defeat of the Pharaoh
Wahibre at the battle of Momemphis. Public and military disgust
at this defeat led to a popular revolt against Wahibre and the
promotion of Ahmose to the throne.
After his demotion Wahibre was strangled. This was probably on
the orders of Ahmose who held him personally responsible for
the defeat.
In spite of the situation he inherited Ahmose enjoyed a comparatively
successful reign. He maintained close relationships with Greece
and formed strategic alliances against the Persian threat.
