Valentinian 1 (364 - 375) This is one coin where impatience got the better of me, so I set about some
careful scraping. Not much else came to light on the obverse
side, but on the reverse the letters ?LORIAR? and ?ANO?. This
was put into the VCRC search engine, which came up with 'GLORIA
ROMANORVM'. An almost identical looking coin on the database
is shown, and listed as Valentinian 1. Things went downhill from here, when I decided a dip in the Scalex descaler was in order. I overdid the concentration and, as you can see, stripped off more than the layer of crud. Technically it's ruined now as the patina was also stripped off but as an experiment it did prove the power of chemical descaler.
